Bongolo Hospital - Day #2

Hey!

Again, I am super tired. Its only 9:30pm here but between the sun & the early days, I am exhausted.

So, real quick....I just killed the hugest bug I have ever seen. It was a mix between a roach, spider and mosquito. If you can picture that. I don't want to know where it came from.

I was at the hospital at 7:30am fore staff devotions and praise time. I think that went until about 8ish. Lisa gave me, Eric Hoffman (the new bookeeper) and Dr. & Mrs. Fredrickson (visiting opthamologists - the wife is GERMAN!!! Ha ha ha.) an extensive tour of the hospital grounds. In short, Bongolo Hospital is quite extensive. Lisa finished our tour at about 9:30.

I popped into Dr. Thomspon's surgery. He was operating (with his residents) on a child's leg. After that case finished, I sat with Dr. Thompson and the residents in the "lounge" while he researched the next case. Dr. Thompson gave me surigical textbook to read on the subject (happy to say I understood!). The woman had a dislocated jaw....Long story short, Dr. Thompson and his residents (despite their valiant efforts) could not fix the woman's jaw without an invasive procedure, so they gave up on the case for today, to research how best to go about treating her. Next we set up a traction apparatus for the child who had been operated on earlier. The residents are awesome! They are all very nice and are from all over Africa. Hopefully, I'll be able to meet Dr. Jean-Claude's (a resident) wife whose name is also Christine!!! After that was done, I walked back to the Kelly's for lunch.

At 1:30pm, I met Dr. Thompson in the lounge. He and another resident prepped for a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate). Basically, the older man could not pee, so Dr. Thompson and his resident used an endoscope with irrigation to remove tissues.

Ok....getting REALLY sleepy...So here is the quickie on the rest of the day. Walked back from hospital and was home by 3:45ish. Went swimming with Emma and Forrest till I don't know when. Washed dishes & set table with Emma. Dinner & more dishwashing till 8pm. Talked with Amanda & Emma. Read a book by Dr. Thompson. Squashed a massive bug.

I have LATE shift at the hospital tomorrow!!! Wohooooo...9:30am. Wake up earlier though for breakfast with the Kelly's....

I'm not gonna lie. Sort of afraid to go to bed with this big bug scare....Jesu me protege!

Oh, and its raining for the second time today. My foot is all healed up. I don't even think I'll have the tiniest scar. Bug bites are still bad. Hand sanitizer works as temporary relief. I itched during all the OR procedures. Bugs love me; what can I say?

  1. Hi Christina! I have really enjoyed reading your blog. You paint a very realistic picture of what your life if like in Gabon. I a sorry that the bugs have been a pain but they may leave you alone after they tire of American cuisine.:O) I will continue to pray for you. Love,
    Mrs. V
